I'm Gemma, and I run The Modern Draper from my studio in Nunhead.
After fifteen years in the television industry I hunted for something that would fulfill my creative needs and indulge my love of design in the home. I have been sewing since I could pick up a needle and after searching for curtains to dress my own windows I knew I could learn to make something far more appealing than the off-the-shelf versions found in shops.
As soon as I started my education in curtain making I was overwhelmed with requests for advice and jobs for brand new, made to measure curtains from people who were fed up with ill fitting curtains, stretched linings and poor quality materials. Even the larger companies offering a made-to-measure service rely on you supplying your own measurements and offer no design advice. This makes is hard for them to offer such features as curtains that are returned to the wall properly, or extra features such as pelmets and valances to hide an ugly track, or deal with tricky window surrounds.
I knew I could do better, and launched my business to offer a truly bespoke service. I work all over the South East on projects as simple as a pair of eyelet curtains or a small roman blind to larger, more complex work with specialist materials such as blackout linings or decorative elements such as London blinds.
